'The Story of a Mother' by Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) first appeared in English in 'A Christmas Greeting to My English Friends' in 1847. In 1875, in honor of Andersen's seventieth birthday, which coincided with the year of his death, an edition of the tale in fifteen languages was published to showcase his international recognition. The languages featured in this book, apart from Danish, include Swedish, Icelandic, German, Low German, Dutch, English, French, Spanish, Modern Greek, Russian, Polish, Czech, Hungarian, and Finnish.
The book was prepared by the scholar Jean Pio (1833-1884) and the linguist and Turkologist Vilhelm Thomsen (1842-1927), who also served as President of the Danish Academy from 1909 until his death.
