The book was illustrated by Elena Safonova (1902-1980), a graphic artist and theater and cinema artist who studied under Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin at VKhUTEMAS (VKhUTEIN). She was closely associated with the OBERIU avant-garde collective, founded by Daniil Kharms and Alexander Vvedensky, which included Futurist writers, musicians, and artists. In 1932, Safonova was arrested along with members of this collective, but they were later permitted to return home from exile.
