Following a series of politically-driven discharges and replacements of high-ranking marine officers in the late 30s, as well as the significant cuts in government funding, the Soviet Navy was in need of reformation. Admiral Nikolai Kuznetsov, appointed in 1939, was faced with a difficult task of restoring the navy’s military capabilities and its overall reputation.
Published by the USSR State Naval, Russia circumnavigators was meant to show the history of Russian - and Soviet - navy in all its glory, painting a direct line from the achievements of the past to the efforts of the present. The book was promoted towards both the marines, who would find valuable lessons and inspiration on its pages, and ordinary readers, who would enjoy the colorful descriptions of adventurous sea travel and faraway shores.
