Early illustrations by Tatiana Mavrina (1900/1902-1996), who studied at VKhUTEMAS under Robert Falk. She was a member of 'Group 13', an association of graphic artists created in 1929. Mavrina began illustrating children's books in the 1930s, following the path of several other Russian avant-garde artists, as there was less censorship in this genre in the USSR. Mavrina holds the distinction of being the first Russian artist to have won the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustration.
