Hedwig (Vicki) Baum (1888-1960) was an Austrian writer best known for her novel 'Menschen im Hotel' (English: 'Grand Hotel'), which was adapted into a film in 1932. This film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. In Germany, Baum's literary works were criticized as sensationalist and amoral, leading to their ban in the Third Reich starting in 1935. She became an American citizen in 1938, and her post-World War II writings were produced in English rather than German.
The novel 'Ulle der Zwerg' (English: 'Ulle the Dwarf') was first published in 1924. It was translated into Russian two years later. Although the translation's name is not specified in this Riga edition, it is most likely a reissue of the first Russian translation.
