Vicki Baum (1888-1960) was an Austrian writer best known for her novel Grand Hotel (1929), which was adapted into an Academy Award winning film in 1932. Baum moved to the US in the early 1930s and gradually began to write more in English. Meanwhile in Germany her literary works were being criticized as sensationalist and amoral, and were ultimately banned in the Third Reich in 1935.
