This book, written by one of the most important dance historians, Cyril W. Beaumont (1891–1976), provides a detailed history of ballet in Russia, with a particular focus on St. Petersburg, from its origins through the third quarter of the 19th century. It traces the evolution of Russian ballet, beginning in the early 17th century under Tsar Alexis and continuing through the reigns of Tsar Peter the Great and Empress Anne, who helped establish a ballet company. The book highlights the development of Russian ballet under the guidance of renowned maîtres de ballet such as Didelot, Perrot, St.-Léon, and Petipa, as well as celebrated ballerinas like Marie Taglioni and Fanny Elssler. It also introduces a line of prominent Russian stars, including Istomina, Kolosova, and Vazem.
