This book on Enrico Cecchetti (1850–1928), the Italian ballet dancer, mime, and founder of the Cecchetti method, was written by the distinguished British dance historian, critic, technical theorist, translator, bookseller, and publisher Cyril W. Beaumont (1891–1976) and published the year following Cecchetti’s death. In 1918, the Russian ballerina Lydia Lopokova introduced Beaumont to Cecchetti’s class, where he was deeply impressed by what he observed. This led to a friendship with Cecchetti and a strong advocacy for his training method. At Cecchetti's request, Beaumont spent the four years working alongside the maestro and dancer Stanislas Idzikowski to codify and preserve the Cecchetti method.
Their collaboration resulted in a technical manual published in 1922, which remains a key resource for training dancers worldwide. Beaumont also played a significant role in establishing the Cecchetti Society, serving as its president from 1923 to 1970.
