This book, written by one of the most important dance historians of the twentieth century, Cyril W. Beaumont (1891–1976), is the first of three supplements to his magnum opus 'The Complete Book of Ballets' (1937), a classic work of ballet literature. The main focus of this supplement is on ballets first performed between 1937 and 1941. Additionally, it includes descriptions of six 19th-century ballets for which new information had come to light since the publication of 'The Complete Book'. Among the choreographers of the 56 ballets chronicled are Fokine, Massine, de Valois, Ashton, Tudor, Lifar, and Howard. A dedicated section on Soviet ballets highlights a dozen productions first staged in Russia during this period.
