George A. Birmingham was the pen name of James Owen Hannay (1865-1960), Irish novelist and clergyman.

Published originally in 1908, Spanish gold was translated into Russian in 1925 and published under two different titles: Ispanskoe Zoloto (‘Spanish Gold’) in 1925 and Lukaviy Vikari (‘A Sly Vikar’) in 1926. It is possible that the name of the book was changed specifically in order to attract attention of the readers amidst the anti-religious campaign of the 1920s. The story of a cunning, witty clergyman, abandoning his oaths and duties in order to pursue wealth, would only benefit from a change in the title.
