'Alice's Adventures' was almost inaccessible to Russian readers for a long time. English editions were unavailable to the common Soviet readers and Russian translations published till 1967 were far from the original.
That's why this edition, which was published for English language learning and came out in a small printing, has been republished twice with these illustrations.
The text is accompanied by the foreword and comments in Russian. The preface focuses on the writing history of 'Alice...', the origin of the characters, and the influence of the novel on international children's literature.
The author of the foreword Dmitry Urnov (1936-2022), a literary critic and Shakespearean scholar, wrote books about J. Joyce, D. Defoe, and Ch. Dickens. In 1991 he moved to the USA.
The illustrator Evgenii Shukaev (1932-1988) was a prominent cartoonist in 'The Crocodile' satirical magazine.
OCLC locates two copies of this edition: in the Berlin State Library and the State Library of Saxony-Anhalt.
