This coloring book features Chinese folk toys such as clay dolls (including a rocking one), wooden figurines, a whistle, a cloth tiger, paper lanterns, and more.
The book was created by Nina Obrucheva (1902-2004), a graphic and theater artist who studied at VKhUTEMAS under Iliya Mashkov.
In the late 1950s, relations between Mao Zedong and Nikita Khrushchev became deeply strained following Khrushchev's de-Stalinization of the USSR and US-Soviet collaboration. On July 16, 1960, the USSR recalled all its specialists from China. This coloring book was signed for printing on November 30, 1959. It is likely that it was one of the last traces of Sino-Soviet friendship.
