The second part of Dos Passos's major work, the U.S.A. trilogy, was published in full for the first time in this edition. Previously, only extracts had appeared in periodicals.
The translation was prepared by Valentin Stenich (1897-1938), a poet who also translated James Joyce's 'Ulysses' into Russian. Stenich was arrested in November 1937 and executed. All editions of Dos Passos's books were banned in Russia until 1958.
