First Russian book edition of the novel, the first part of Dos Passos' U.S.A. trilogy.
Before this edition, only extracts had been published in periodicals.
The translation was prepared by Valentin Stenich (1897-1938), a poet who also translated James Joyce's 'Ulysses' into Russian. Stenich was arrested in November 1937 and executed. All editions of Dos Passos's books were banned in Russia until 1958.
The cover design was created by graphic artist and book illustrator Alexey Ushin (1904-1942). Ushin tragically lost his life during the Siege of Leningrad.
