Little is known about the author Nadezhda Dostoinova (1889-?), who was born in Vologda, a city in the northwest of Russia. After the revolution, she taught at Petrograd State University and at the Bestuzhev Courses in Petrograd (now Saint Petersburg), which was the largest and most prominent women's higher education institution in Imperial Russia. From 1919 onward, she lived in Vologda and worked at the Vologda Public Library. In the same year that this book was published, another of her works, 'The History of Clothing', also appeared.
