The author of these stories about Tajikistan is Tatiana Dubinskaia (Krulikovskaia; 1902–1990), a rather enigmatic figure whose life is surrounded by rumors. As a young woman, she reportedly served in intelligence during World War I and later participated in the Civil War. She worked at the Main Artillery Directorate (GAU) of the Red Army before becoming a reviewer at the Writers' Union. Her first book, 'In the Trenches' (1930), recounted her military experiences. Dubinskaia was also a neighbor of the repressed poet Osip Mandelstam, and according to his wife, she kept an eye on him and reported to authorities.
In 1931 (or possibly 1933, based on other sources), she was dispatched to Tajikistan by the Writers' Union, where she contributed to the newspaper 'Communist of Tajikistan' and wrote stories about the region's transformation under Soviet influence. Likely part of a broader Sovietization campaign in the early 1930s, when many Soviet poets and writers visited Tajikistan, this period also coincided with preparations for the First Congress of Soviet Writers of Tajikistan (May 1934). There are also claims that during this trip, Dubinskaia may have participated in operations against the Basmachi rebels, who actively resisted Soviet rule in Central Asia.
The cover design and illustrations were created by Vladimir Roskin (1896-1984), a prominent poster artist known for his collaboration with Vladimir Mayakovsky. Roskin also worked as an artist-designer at several international art fairs during the 1930s. In 1928, he participated in the International Print Exhibition in Cologne alongside El Lissitzky.
