This rare interactive book for children features a special ‘film sheet’ that creates a visual effect, making images appear animated - change as the reader moves the film. To activate the effect, the reader holds the sheet in front of the illustration, leaving some space between them, and slowly slides it from left to right. As a result, the images come to life—just as the belly band claims, it's 'more interesting than television and manga'.
Among the various images of nature and people, the book includes movable illustrations of The Beatles and Dracula.
The book was created by Furukawa Taku (b. 1941), a renowned animator, illustrator, and children's book author. He is the president of the Japan Animation Association (JAA) and an advisor to the Japan Cartoonists Association. His son, Shuntaro Furukawa, is the president of Nintendo.
One of Furukawa's most significant contributions to animation history was reviving the phenakistiscope, a 19th-century European animation device. His 1975 animated short ‘Odoroki-ban’ (驚き盤), which utilized the phenakistiscope, won the Special Jury Prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
