The book was written by Serge Grigoriev (1883–1968), a Russian dancer and ballet master who served as regisseur for the Diaghilev company for twenty years, overseeing its day-to-day operations. It provides a detailed chronology, beginning with the company’s initial preparations in St. Petersburg, tracing its triumphs and setbacks in Paris, its misfortunes in the United States, the upheaval in Portugal, and culminating in its final phase when, cut off from Russia, the Ballet established an official home in Monte Carlo.
