This book features a collection of sketches by Valentine Gross (1887–1968), a French artist and writer who worked with the Ballets Russes and closely observed its first performances in Paris, particularly focusing on Nijinsky. Her expressive sketches vividly capture the movement and artistry of Vaslav Nijinsky, Tamara Karsavina, and Bronislava Nijinska in their most iconic roles, offering an authentic visual record of their choreography. The sketches were donated to the Museum of Theatre Arts, London, by Jean Hugo, an artist and Gross’s husband.
Additionally, the book includes an introduction and detailed analysis by Richard Buckle (1916–2001), a prominent English ballet critic and founder of the 'Ballet' magazine.
