This satirical map of Europe depicted the warring nations using caricatures of dogs and people, symbolizing their attitudes towards the War.
Germany was humorously portrayed as a Dachshund, Austria as a Mongrel, Belgium as a little Griffon, France as a large Poodle, and Britain as the Bulldog, led by a figure in naval uniform. The last tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, was depicted driving a steamroller alongside a Russian bear.
The text accompanying the map was written by Walter Emanuel (1869-1915), a British humorist and author known for his anthropomorphic dog books. In his commentary, he cleverly captured and satirized the political situation in Europe during the early stages of the Great War.
