The photo was made by Alice Mary Hughes (1857-1939), a a pioneer of Edwardian portrait photography, specializing in portraits of royalties and fashion icons. She held her own photoatelier in London from 1891 to 1910.
Based on the inscription, it can be assumed that the photo was meant for one of Alexandra’s nephews. Among her many nephews were the children of her brothers, King George I of Greece and Prince Valdemar of Denmark, and also the children of her sisters, Princess Dagmar, married Russian Emperor Nicholas II and Crown Princess Thyra of Hanover.
