An important collection of American poets translated into Russian.

The first Russian anthology of American poets from the 20th century, titled ‘Poety Ameriki. XX vek’(‘Poets of America. The 20th Century’), was published in 1939. It was compiled and translated by two influential Soviet translators, Mikhail Zenkevich and Ivan Kashkin (1899-1963), with the latter renowned as the leader of the ‘Soviet school’ of literary translation, praised by Hemingway as ‘the best critic and translator I ever had’. A second anthology, compiled solely by Zenkevich, followed in 1946. Fourteen years later, amidst the Khrushchev Thaw period and just a year after Nikita Khrushchev's historic state visit to the United States, the first of its kind by a Soviet or Russian leader, Kashkin compiled and published his own anthology. This marked another significant contribution to Russian understanding of 20th-century American poets. 
The book features translations of works by the following American poets: Walt Whitman (1819-1892), Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), Robert Frost (1874-1963), Edwin Arlington Robinson (1869-1935), Carl Sandburg (1878-1967), John Reed (1887-1920), Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931), Edgar Lee Masters (1868-1950), Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982), Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950), Malcolm Cowley (1898-1989), Genevieve Taggard (1894-1948), Hilda Doolittle (1886-1961), William Carlos Williams (1883-1963), Joseph Kalar (1906-1972), Langston Hughes (1901-1967), Lawrence Gellert (1898-1979?), Ben Lucien Burman (1895-1984), William Rose Benét (1886-1950), Edward Connor, and Aunt Molly Jackson (1880-1960).
It's important to note that while the list of poets in Kashkin's book partially overlaps with the 1939 and 1946 anthologies, he selected different poems by these authors for translation. Additionally, alongside classic poets, Kashkin introduced Soviet readers to Benét’s ‘Jesse James’ and Cowley, as well as the first Russian translation of John Reed’s poem ‘America in 1918’. The poem portrays the life and struggles of hobos, a term referring to transient migrant workers in the United States, particularly during the Great Depression.
