The story about Sabu, a Japanese boy, was written by Tomiko Inui (1924-2002), a Japanese children's book writer who received numerous awards, including the Mainishi Publishing Culture Award and the Akaitori Award for Children's Literature. Inui visited the USSR in 1963 and was a runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen prize the following year.
The illustrations for the story were created by Mariya Uspenskaya (1925-2007), a graphic and poster artist. Uspenskaya studied at the Surikov Moscow State Academy Art Institute under Mikhail Cheremnykh and later contributed to the popular Soviet children's magazine 'Murzilka'.
