Mikheil Javakhishvili (born Adamashvili; 1880–1937) was a Georgian novelist widely regarded as one of the foremost twentieth-century Georgian writers.
'His vivid storytelling, immediate in its approach, buoyant humor, subtle irony, and moral courage merit comparison with those of Stendhal, Guy de Maupassant, and Émile Zola. In modern Georgian prose, only Konstantine Gamsakhurdia could aspire to the same international level', wrote Donald Rayfield in 'The Literature of Georgia' (2000).
During the Great Purge, Javakhishvili was arrested, tortured, and executed. Following his trial, his books were banned.
One of the translators of the book was Nikolai Cherniavskii (1892–1942/1943/1947?), a poet, translator, and collector of Georgian folklore. He was a member of the Futurist collective '41°' in Tbilisi, alongside Ilia and Kirill Zdanevich. Cherniavskii suffered from epilepsy, and the exact year of his death remains uncertain.
