This is the first publication of Boris Kustodiev's illustrations for Gogol's stories 'Koliaska' ('The Carriage') and 'Shinel'' ('The Overcoat').

The collection was published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Nikolai Gogol and includes works by artists Boris Kustodiev, Nikolai Gerardov, Aleksandr Roman, and Dmitrii Gavril'tsev. Their illustrations accompany stories such as 'Maiskaia Noch''('May Night, or the Drowned Maiden'), 'Sorochinskaia Iarmarka' ('Sorochynsky Fair'), 'Vecher Nakanune Ivana Kupala' ('St. John's Eve'), 'Zakoldovannoe Mesto' ('A Bewitched Place'), 'Propavshaia Gramota' ('The Lost Letter'), and 'Noch' pered Rozhdestvom' ('Christmas Eve').
The primary artist in this collection is Boris Kustodiev (1878-1927), a significant painter and stage designer who studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Ilya Repin and was a member of the World of Art movement. In 1905, the leading Russian publishing house of that era, the Expedition for the Preparation of State Papers, commissioned Kustodiev to create illustrations for Gogol's stories. However, this edition was never published.
For the first time, these illustrations by Kustodiev are published in this collection and are described as 'narrative' because they complement Gogol's text. The next publication of these illustrations occurred in 1946. The original drawings are preserved by the State Russian Museum and the Institute of Russian Literature.
