This collection features tales by the Udege, an indigenous people of the Primorsky Krai and Khabarovsk Krai regions in Russia, who are among the closest ethnic groups to the Manchu and Nanai. The collection includes five tales: 'Meyakhi', 'Bele', 'Guasa', 'The Poor Dzenku and the Rich Baya Mafa', and 'Two Suns'.
The book was compiled and written by Valentina Kialundzuga (1936–2022), an Udege writer, folklorist, storyteller, and prominent public figure. It was her first published book, released during her tenure as chairwoman of the village council in the Russian Far East, referred to in the publisher's preface as 'the head of the taiga village of Gvasyugi'. In 1990s she participated in developing a new alphabet for the Khor dialect of the Udege language.
The tales are accompanied by captivating illustrations by the artist Gennadii Pavlishin (born 1938). Born in Khabarovsk, he studied at an art school in Vladivostok and later worked in the laboratory of ethnography at the Far Eastern Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He traveled extensively throughout the Far East, researching the lives, customs, and cultures of indigenous peoples, and created numerous drawings, sketches, and drafts that served as the basis for his paintings. Since 1965, he has collaborated with the Khabarovsk book publishing house.
