That was the part of the first official journey undertaken by the royal family from Russia to Europe in the autumn of 1896. In Great Britain the pair introduced their eldest newborn daughter Olga to her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.
Victoria noted in her journal that it felt like 'a dream having dear Alicky & Nicky here'.
This official portrait was published twice at least: in E. Ukhtomsky's book, Journey to the East of His Imperial Highness the Sovereign Heir, Tsarevich... (1893-1897), and in S. Stepin's book, His Imperial Majesty's Own Convoy (1899)
