Tatiana Mavrina (Lebedeva; 1900/1902–1996) studied at VKhUTEMAS under Robert Falk and was a member of 'Group 13', an association of graphic artists founded in 1929. Like many Russian avant-garde artists of her generation, she turned to children’s book illustration in the 1930s as a means of artistic expression that allowed her to avoid political repression during the Stalin era.
Following World War II, Mavrina developed a distinctive and instantly recognizable style—'a method that combined the traditions of Russian primitivism with the painterly experiments of the early 20th century'. She traveled extensively through historic Russian towns, producing sketches that later served as the basis for her book illustrations.
In 1976, Mavrina became the first Russian artist to be awarded the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award for her contributions to children’s literature.
Here, she transformed well-known characters from Russian fairy tales, depicting them within the contours of the Cyrillic alphabet. Gold and silver paints were used in the illustrations for this edition.
OCLC locates two copies of this edition: in University of Pittsburgh (Nesbitt Collection) and the Portland State University Library.
