The icebreaker 'Krassin' was originally constructed as 'Svyatogor' for the Imperial Russian Navy and was completed in 1917. One of its most renowned missions was the rescue operation of Umberto Nobile and his surviving crew after their airship Italia crashed on the ice during their return from the North Pole in 1928. In 1933, 'Krassin' achieved another remarkable feat by becoming the first vessel to reach the previously inaccessible northern shores of Novaya Zemlya in the history of navigation. It held the distinction of being the world's most powerful icebreaker until the early 1950s.
This book focuses on the involvement of 'Krassin' in the First Lena expedition in 1933 and its pivotal role in the rescue operation of the crew of SS Chelyuskin in 1934.
