This book is an exploration of the life and career of Vaslav Nijinsky (1889–1950), featuring his private diary edited by his wife. It combines critical appraisals from artistic collaborators and professional critics with a remarkable collection of photographs that span his career—from his admission to the Imperial Ballet School in Russia to his later years in Swiss confinement.
It is also the first in a series of illustrated monographs by Paul Magriel (1906–1990), a renowned dance historian and author. Two subsequent volumes in the series were devoted to Anna Pavlova and Isadora Duncan.
