Extremely rare provincial film poster for ‘Othello’ (1922), a German silent film directed by the later Hollywood émigré Dmitriy Bukhovecky (Dimitri Buchowetzki; 1885–1932). Bukhovecky emigrated from Soviet Ukraine in 1919 and went on to work as a director and screenwriter in Europe and the USA with Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This was the second German adaptation of ‘Othello’. Emil Jannings, the first Oscar recipient for Best Actor, starred as Othello.
The poster was published in Kozmodemyansk (Mari El Republic in the Volga region), and the film was described as ‘an exceptional feature film’ and ‘action film’, set in Venice and Cyprus.
