This verse folktale originates from the folklore of the Nanai people, a Tungusic group from East Asia, and was written by the renowned Nanai poet Andrei Passar (1925–2013). The Russian translation was prepared by Iakov Gordin (b. 1935), an acclaimed poet, writer, and editor-in-chief of the well-known literary magazine 'Zvezda'. 
The illustrations were created by artist and illustrator Kirill Ovchinnikov (b. 1933), celebrated for his work on the folktales of Russia’s indigenous peoples.
