The first and only Russian edition of Jim Phelan's novel '...and Blackthorns' (1944). This was the second and last of Phelan's books to be published in Russian.

One of the translators was Nadezhda Volpin (1900-1998), a female translator, Imaginism-style poet, and memoirist. She was the wife of poet Sergei Yesenin and the mother of his son Alexander. She also translated novels by Walter Scott, Conan Doyle, Sinclair Lewis, H.G. Wells, and others.
The foreword is by Abel Startsev (1909-2005), a literary critic and translator who was arrested during the anti-Semitic campaign in 1948 as an American spy and imprisoned until 1955. Books containing his name were banned, and his prefaces had to be removed from surviving copies.
