No 132 of 400 numbered copies. Rare and unusual edition featuring the poetry of Akhmatova and Pasternak.
This poetry anthology includes war poetry by prominent Soviet authors such as Konstantin Simonov, Vera Inber, Samuil Marshak, Sergey Mikhalkov, and Aleksandr Tvardovsky. However, the collection is particularly notable for featuring four poems each by Boris Pasternak and Anna Akhmatova, who had few opportunities to publish their work in Russia at that time. Notably, the table of contents lists only two of Akhmatova's poems, but the edition actually includes two more: 'Kliatva' and 'Kopai, moia lopata...'.
These publications are still not listed in the bibliographies of Akhmatova and Pasternak.
The anthology was compiled by Vladimir Rogov (1906-1989), a sinologist who worked with the Chinese Eastern Railway and served as a press correspondent for TASS in China from 1937. Rogov was also involved in establishing the pro-Soviet publishing house Shidai/Epokha in Shanghai. In February 1942, the Japanese began arresting many foreign journalists, businessmen, and police officers. The anthology was published in February 1943, shortly before Rogov was forced to return to Moscow in April of the same year.
