One of El Lissitzky’s masterpieces, modeled after the magazine USSR Under Construction; it resembles a printed out documentary. The top cover of the slipcase features a reproduction of A. Skurikhin’s photo Builders of Kuznetsk: Machinist Maria Rotova and Miner Fyodor Popov (1930). The outline of the relief is a rounded metal frame with rivets, which resembles an airplane porthole or a window in a car door.
Presented here is a proof copy of the edition, different from the one that went into print. This slipcase differs in the color of the letters on the top cover and the absence of silver ink on the spine. Some of the illustrations of the first few volumes are missing titles; several are tinted slightly orange. There are many changes to the text, including its placement and color. Noteworthy, all statistical data for the year 1934 differs heavily - in the final edition, the numbers are listed higher.
Volume 3 of the proof copy features a photo from the 1934 November demonstration, showing Bulgarian revolutionary Georgy Dimitrov (1882-1949) and French writer Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) standing alongside Stalin at the Mausoleum. This photo was replaced with a different one in the published version.
This rare edition provides a unique insight into the creation process of, arguably, one of the most technically challenging and stylistically one-of-a-kind books of the XX century.
