This propaganda book details the inaugural Russian expedition to Wrangel Island aboard the icebreaker Red October, commanded by Boris Davydov, from July to October 1924. The expedition was prompted by the presence of American and Canadian settlers on the island, who had established a colony in 1921 and expanded it in 1923. The Soviet authorities aimed to restore state sovereignty over the island. During the expedition, the Soviet flag was raised, and settlers were evacuated to Vladivostok. Additionally, polar explorers conducted hydrological, geodetic, and geophysical research on the island.
The book is more propagandistic than scientific, filled with patriotic rhetoric aimed at settling international disputes over Wrangel Island.
Boris Davydov (1884-1925), a Russian maritime explorer, had previously participated in the Arctic hydrographic expedition aboard the ship Taimyr under Boris Vilkitsky. Davydov raised the Soviet flag over Wrangel Island in 1924 but tragically passed away shortly after arriving in Vladivostok.
The cover is likely designed by Georgy Berendgof (1903-1946), an artist and member of the OST group.
