The Radium Institute was established in January 1922, under the initiative and direction of Academician Vladimir Vernadsky. The institute included a factory where Khlopin and his wife, fellow scientist Maria Pasvik, produced Russia's first high-purity radium preparations in December 1921. In 1937, the institute constructed Europe's first cyclotron. Khlopin was a leading figure in the atomic project and the founder of the Soviet radiochemistry school. Today, the institute bears his name.
Additionally, this issue includes an article on the Smithsonian Institution.
