These are the memoirs of English ballerina Lydia Sokolova (born Hilda Tansley Munnings; 1896–1974). Trained by the legendary Anna Pavlova and Enrico Cecchetti, she became the principal character dancer for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes during its early years, alongside luminaries such as Nijinsky, Karsavina, and Fokine. Sokolova remained with the company until its dissolution in 1929 following Diaghilev's death.
