This rare edition, produced by the Soviet Military Administration in Germany (SMAG), was likely intended for internal use only. Printed in the printing office of the Taegliche Rundschau newspaper.
SMAG governed the Soviet occupation zone of Germany from May 1945 until October 1949. Its Political Department was responsible for disseminating pro-Soviet propaganda among the German population through newspapers (including Taegliche Rundschau), magazines, leaflets, and brochures. This edition, however, appears to have been aimed at the Soviet military rather than the local population. Its purpose was to foster patriotic unity among soldiers stationed far from the Soviet ideological sphere. The book features a collection of Soviet songs from the Stalinist period, beginning with the USSR anthem and including songs from popular Soviet films. After Stalin's death, the lyrics of many of these songs were revised.
