Gitanjali: (Song Offerings)’ is a collection of poems by the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for its English translation. This honor made him the first non-European, the first Asian, and the only Indian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Tagore’s books first appeared in Russian in 1914, and he quickly became very popular. His popularity endured even in Soviet Russia, with a brief gap during the 1930s and 1940s.
This particular translation of 'Gitanjali' was prepared by Nikolai Pusheshnikov (1882-1939), who was also the nephew of Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), the first Russian writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1933. Bunin edited this translation of Tagore’s work. Pusheshnikov's translation was republished four times, with the final edition appearing in 1918.
