Second edition.

This collection presents stories about African American life, highlighting the struggle for freedom and clever trickster tales in which enslaved characters outsmart their oppressors.
The book features illustrations by Boris Vlasov (1936–1981), a graphic artist and book illustrator from a prominent family of artists who studied at the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture named after Ilya Repin. Notably, the art editor of this book was Erik Bulatov (b. 1933), an influential conceptual artist and prominent figure in Sots Art. In the 1960s, Bulatov helped form the Sretensky Boulevard Group, alongside artists Ilya Kabakov, Edik Steinberg, Oleg Vassiliev, Vladimir Yankilevsky, and Viktor Pivovarov. Through this collective, Bulatov became a leading member of the loosely affiliated Moscow Conceptualists.
