This rare brochure is dedicated to Tamara Karsavina (1885–1978), one of the leading ballerinas of the Mariinsky Theatre and later Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
The text was written by French music critic Robert Brussel (1874–1940), one of the earliest advocates of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in the late 1900s. In 1913, he also played a role in organizing the premiere of ‘The Rite of Spring’. The illustrations featuring portraits of Karsavina were created by Charles Gir (1883–1941), a renowned painter, watercolorist, sculptor, and illustrator. A frequent visitor to the Paris Opera, Gir was well-known for his depictions of ballerinas, particularly his pastels of Anna Pavlova and Tamara Karsavina, which brought him significant acclaim.
