The book was published by the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Soviet Union as a textbook. It features a comprehensive collection of criminal tattoo images, including real photographs, along with their meanings and the specific body areas where they are commonly found. These tattoos were significant indicators of various aspects, such as the length of time spent in prison, the nature of the crimes committed, and the individual's reputation among inmates.
This album was meticulously compiled by Arkadiy Bronnikov (born in 1926), a renowned expert in tattoo iconography and considered Russia's foremost authority on the subject. Beginning in 1963, he served as a professor of criminalistics at the Perm Faculty of the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, a role he held until 1991. As part of his responsibilities, he regularly visited correctional institutions in the Ural and Siberian regions, gaining invaluable insights into the significance and symbolism of tattoos within the criminal world.
