The cover and typography design were created by the Russian constructivist artist Varvara Stepanova (1894–1958), a long-time collaborator and wife of Alexander Rodchenko. Stepanova was known for her work in designing posters, books, magazines, and clothing. From 1919 to 1920, she served as the assistant director of the art and literature section of IZO Narkompros (the Department of Fine Arts of the People's Commissariat for Education). She also led the textile department at VKhUTEMAS.
Starting in 1929, issues of the magazine featured Stepanova's monogram 'SV' on the front cover.
