The first Russian translation.

Anthony Trollope's novels were very popular in Russia. The first translation was published in 1861, and twenty-one of Trollope's novels were translated into Russian soon after their original publications. While working on 'War and Peace', Leo Tolstoy wrote, 'Trollope kills me with his mastery'.
This translation was published in the same year the original book appeared in London. Although the translator is not credited in the book, it is likely that Elizaveta Akhmatova (1820-1904), a female writer, prominent publisher, and translator, prepared it. Akhmatova published the monthly serial 'Sobranie inostrannykh romanov, povestei i rasskazov' ('Collection of Foreign Novels, Stories, and Short Stories') from 1856 to 1885. This series featured the first Russian translations of novels by Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, and Edgar Poe. Subsequent Russian editions of 'Phineas Finn' were also published in this series.
