Updike traveled to the USSR from October 20th to December 6th, 1964 (Bellis De J. The John Updike Encyclopedia, 2000). 
For the first time in the Soviet Union 'The Centaur' appeared in the magazine 'Inostrannaya literatura' (No 1-2) in 1965. The book edition was published in 1966.
