This fictionalized juvenile story depicts the first Soviet settlement on Wrangel Island led by Russian polar explorer Georgii Ushakov. The small Russian colony spent three years on the island without any radio connection to the outside world. The end of the book anticipates the arrival of the ice-breaker Litke, which was supposed to bring the new head of the winterers.
The author Nadezhda Voitinskaya (1886-1965), an artist, translator, and writer, devotes a part of the book to describing the life and customs of the Chukchi and Eskimos.
OCLC locates two copies, in the British Library and in Denmark.
